Three Lion's Bakery on Fifth Avenue

The Reporter wandered down Fifth Avenue yesterday to get some information on home loans from the Portland Development Commission. On the way, he walked past Three Lions Bakery--one of Portland top three bakeries (along with Ja Civa and Helen Bernhard). As I passed by the door, a signed leapt out at the Reporter. Actually, it was more than a mere jump. The sign flew out the window, reached around my neck and slapped me in the face: "10:00 - 12:00, Free Range Hamburger or Philly Cheesesteak, $3.00"

$3.00? $3.00? $3.00! Thoughts of home purchases, renovations, and housing bubbles evaporated from my brain as the Reporter's belly dragged him into Three Lions. I strolled up to the counter, ordered the cheesesteak sandwich, double checked that it was actually $3.00. A smile creeped across this Reporter's face when he saw the prices falling faster than Wal-Mart's yellow smiley:

$7.95 Sandwich
-$4.95 Discount
======
$3.00 Total

As I waited, I perused last week's Mercury, and listened in on some practicing thespians having lunch.

Within minutes the sandwich arrived on a seemingly large plate with said cheesesteak sandwich and ... one strawberry.

The sandwich was a bit dry, even though it had sufficient cheese. It would have benefitted from a special sauce (such a Fatty Patties, below). I searched in vain for a jar of mustard, but did not ask because I felt guilty for only paying $3.00. A little sprinkling of salt brought out some flavor and in the end I was satisfied.

Would I go back? Well, actions speak louder than words. Today, on my way back from buying tickets to tomorrow's Timbers match, I walked past Three Lions on Morrison and was saddened that the $3.00 sandwich deal was not offered there.

Dear Cart Reporter,
Your cart reviews are enlightening and entertaining. Obviously you have an exceptional fondness for food, as well as discriminating taste. Appreciation for price, presentation, and quality render your comments a valuable service. After reading each entry my mouth is watering and I feel compelled to run out and try the "dish of the day." What disappointment lies in the reality that I don't live in Portland and that words and photos are as good as it gets. Whoever said life is fair?!?
